Out of The Blue: Analysis
The poem “Out Of The Blue” by Simon Armitage on the events of the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks. The vibes that I have gotten from the poem have been particularly sinister as I had already known about the terrorist attack in 2000 and the poem used adjectives in a way that gave me a visual perspective of how the victims would have felt at that situation. Specifically the sentence “The heat behind me is searing, searing”. As this gives me, the reader the impression that the fire and heat from the explosion of the plane had been perhaps a driving force behind the decision of jumping off the skyscraper to their death.
The author also utilizes another technique of using many onomatopoeia in which repeat throughout the poem as Simon uses this method to enthusize the point of the danger being overbearing and bewildering towards the victims of the 9/11 bombings.
An example of personification in the poem would be “The heat behind me is bullying, driving” This is a prime example because it is describing the heat as a
The World Trade Center Complex at 110 stories each and 10-million-square feet of office space for about 35,000 people and 430 companies. The author re-imagined what it would have been like for the husbands and wives stuck up there, as a few seconds before the first plane had hit it was almost as like the day would have ended like any over.
Simon Armitage was born on the 26th of May, 1963 in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. He is a ronound British Poet and translator.
Pride and Shame in ‘To Kill a MockingBird’ written by Harper Lee.
In ‘To kill a Mockingbird’ Pride is shown by Francis stirring up Scout by calling her father a “Nigger Lover” and to defend her family she retaliates by Splitting her knuckle on his front teeth. This was done because Scout felt enraged that he was disrespecting her Father in which she loves and cares for and therefore this is an example of Scout protecting her family’s pride.
How Does Harper Lee Satirise The White Community In This Chapter ?
The author of the book ‘to kill a mockingbird’ (Harper Lee) uses satire in this book to show the distant reader what the white community of Maycomb thinks of the events that take place in that book. Soon after the trial there is an array of gossip engulfing the townspeople and there is a partition between the groups and families of people. At the start of chapter 22 the main antagonists and youth of Maycomb feel very emotional on how the trial was played out as Jem begins to cry in anger because him and his comrades feel so angry that the adults could be so ignorant to not see how plain simple it was to understand that Tom Robinson was innocent. Further on in the chapter Dill explains how he would grow up to become a Clown and laugh at how stupid Adults could be.”There aint one thing in this world I can do about folks except laugh, so im gonna join the circus and laugh my head off “. So this extract from the book shows how the naive yet inexperienced children understand the situation from a fresh perspective and are in disgust with how the adult people dealt with the case when Atticus had given valid and thorough information towards the court case. The Black community however are very thankful and believed that they had all been in debt to Atticus as he would of only at the time been a lawyer that would of fought for Mr Robinson’s case and this was not an easy thing to do because the white community do not like how Atticus stood up for the “Negro”.
Who are Mockingbirds ?
A Mockingbird as a character in a story for me is someone that gives off a very positive and high spirited effect on the reader. As Miss Maudie said ‘Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.’ This quote comes up a lot in the book. Often they are harmless and somewhat innocent entity’s in which are pummeled and bombarded with abuse even when there is no valid reason for this. For example Tom Robinson is a Mockingbird because out of the kindness of his heart he would day by day, help Mayella Ewell with the more harder chores around her compound like cutting up chiffarobes and all sorts. Mayella had offered to pay dear Tom Robinson but he had declined because he saw the hardship that she would go through with taking care of her siblings and her father. He continuously did this until one evening Mayella pounced on Tom Robinson and tried to kiss him and therefore initiate sexual conduct but Tom refused and pushed her away gently and this was at which the point that Bob Ewell was peering through the window and saw this act. and ran off. Ashamed and in disgust she had claimed that Tom raped her when it was her herself that had raped him. He was then taken to caught and charged with rape. This shows how Tom Robinson is a Mockingbird because he was innocent , kind hearted and high spirited yet he was condemned with the charge of rape even tho he had done nothing wrong to Mayella Ewell.
Slavery In America .
Slavery had started in 1619 when the Dutch had first brought the first group of captured Africans to America. West Africa was in fact part of a major trading network that dates back even before the Europeans. Trading routes had crossed from the Sahara further linking the north to the west. A lot like Africa , America was also shaped by slavery. To kill a Mockingbird relates to slavery in America in-which throughout the book it portrays a crippled black man who is wrongly accused of raping a nineteen year old white girl. This is a realistic take on how discrimination and how blacks can be wrongly accused and mistrusted at that time is shown by this tale.
The Symbolism of The Courthouse By Eugene.
The Courthouse in how to kill a mockingbird are very old and are the only surviving remains of the old courthouse in which had been used in the times of slavery and corruption. The old Courthouse was burned down 32 years after the abolishment of slavery. The courthouse was held in Alabama which is in the deep south and many of its inhabitants did not like the fact that Black People were free from slavery and by law are allowed to walk freely among the majority of White people. Even thou the Courthouse was burned down to show that times are different, the Maycomb inhabitants kept what was left which was the Sturdy Greek pillars and built a new section of the courthouse so that they could connect.
To Kill A Mockingbird Writing Excersice : Morality
The evidence of Harper Lee’s morality can be shown throughout the text using character. I can explain this because the main protagonist Scout is used as a vessel in which Harper explains her moral beliefs and thoughts on racism in the southern part of the United States. She does this because anything said from a child is acceptable as they have much to learn and they are young and naive meaning that anything said will be taken lightly. However if Harper lee was to express her views with the world directly then there would have been an uproar because of her being a fully grown adult. Many of the characters in the book are likely to have been influenced by the author’s childhood as she sees Scout as a younger version of herself. “Well how do you know we ain’t Negroes?” This is one of the many questions that Scout asks Atticus who is her biological father and helps her out throughout the book. For someone studying the 1930’s or Racial Segregation in Southern America then this would be a good source for understanding what it most probably would of been like, because the author actually watched her friends experience such negativity as she grew up, and she would therefore be able to capture the events from their perspective as well as her own. Children are not born Racist and are actually born happy and this means that children are only introduced into hate and misfortune by their parents. How Jem and Scout view the world is a reflection on how they were brought up by Atticus.
My Review on Turf by John Lucas
Turf written by John Lucas is one of my favorite books as it explores the student life in north London,Hackney.
The book follows Jay, a student growing up in Hackney, North London and as his 16th birthday approaches, Jay is offered the chance to move up in the ‘food chain’ from the youngers to the Olders of the Blake Street Boyz (His local Gang). But to be accepted in he is asked to kill a classmate, and Jay begins to rethink if the Blake Street Boyz is all its pumped up to be. Jay has been sent to live with his ardent Christian aunt; her flat is a “Welcome Break for souls” crammed with metaphors, including a hologram of Jesus that taunts Jay with life or death.
The book contains many hints to religion and choice.Jay meets new characters who teach him new lessons and change his perception of life. Although this book is for teens it contains sexual content and violence which i like because its a lot more realistic because it goes beyond the stereotype. The book is read in 3rd person but from Jay the main antagonists perspective. I find it entertaining how John Lucas (the writer) writ the book with so much detail but hadn’t had any history with hackney or gangs. Often the book is quite comedic and funny but are diluted down with unfortunate happenings. The author guided the plot with Jays decisions and choices. He also creates characters like Leo in which hangs around a church and has a rather large spliff in which he smokes and gives many prophecy’s to jay almost like the apothecary in Romeo and Juliet. His aunt also steers Jay’s direction by talking to him about religion and the smart choices. The book explains the segregation between whats cool and whats not mainly at the start in which it explains that when your 15 everything matters. Jay explains how Mars, twix and snickers are too mainstream and flake , Buenos and malteser are too girly. He then explains how Galaxy is not too girlie, but actually that galaxy is a good choice because it shows certain class, like a mans taste. But soon after he explains how he would of liked to eat a Milky way bar but that’s light and fluffy because it took him back to when things were simple and it didn’t matter what chocolate he ate but now he seems to think that there is no way eating a chocolate bar not in his section.
