How Does Harper Lee Satirise The White Community In This Chapter ?

The author of the book ‘to kill a mockingbird’ (Harper Lee) uses satire in this book to show the distant reader what the white community of Maycomb thinks of the events that take place in that book. Soon after the trial there is an array of gossip engulfing the townspeople and there is a partition between the groups and families of people. At the start of chapter 22 the main antagonists and youth of Maycomb feel very emotional on how the trial was played out as Jem begins to cry in  anger because him and his comrades feel so angry that the adults could be so ignorant to not see how plain simple it was to understand that Tom Robinson was innocent. Further on in the chapter Dill explains how he would grow up to become a Clown and laugh at how stupid Adults could be.”There aint one thing in this world I can do about folks except laugh, so im gonna join the circus and laugh my head off “. So this extract from the book shows how the naive yet inexperienced children understand the situation from a fresh perspective and are in disgust with how the adult people dealt with the case when Atticus had given valid and thorough information towards the court case. The Black community however are very thankful and believed that they had all been in debt to Atticus as he would of only at the time been a lawyer that would of fought for Mr Robinson’s case and this was not an easy thing to do because the white community do not like how Atticus stood up for the “Negro”.

Who are Mockingbirds ?

A Mockingbird as a character in a story for me is someone that gives off a very positive and high spirited effect on the reader. As Miss Maudie said ‘Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.’ This quote comes up a lot in the book. Often they are harmless and somewhat  innocent entity’s in which are pummeled and bombarded with abuse even when there is no valid reason for this. For example Tom Robinson is a Mockingbird because out of the kindness of his heart he would day by day, help Mayella Ewell with the more harder chores around her compound like cutting up chiffarobes and all sorts. Mayella had offered to pay dear Tom Robinson but he had declined because he saw the hardship that she would go through with taking care of her siblings and her father. He continuously did this until one evening Mayella pounced on Tom Robinson and tried to kiss him and therefore initiate sexual conduct but Tom refused and pushed her away gently and this was at which the point that Bob Ewell was peering through the window and saw this act. and ran off. Ashamed and in disgust she had claimed that Tom raped her when it was her herself that had raped him. He was then taken to caught and charged with rape. This shows how Tom Robinson is a Mockingbird because he was innocent , kind hearted and high spirited yet he was condemned with the charge of rape even tho he had done nothing wrong to Mayella Ewell.
